Hero To Hero 5 Mile Walk/Run/Roll

New Carlisle, OH

Race info
The first Annual Hero to Hero memorial run honors two local service members killed in the line of duty, Deputy Sheriff Gregory Raynor who died April 18, 1978 in Clark County while responding to a 9-1-1 call, and Staff Sergeant Wesley Williams who was killed on December 10, 2012 during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Participants will begin at the flagpole at Tecumseh High School, dedicated to the memory of Sgt. Williams and run to the flagpole at Raynor Park, dedicated to Deputy Raynor.

Participants are invited to honor any first responders and service members who have fallen during or because of serving in the line of duty during their run.

What is Hero To Hero?
Hero to Hero is a 501c-3 that provides student scholarships as well as funding to help first responders and current and former military service members thrive, from providing scholarships to funding post-career needs such as mental health treatment, service animals, prosthetics, and more. The nonprofit honors the service and commitment of thousands of men and women who have served and the thousands more of first responders and military service members killed in the line of duty.

In 2017, David and Hollee Raynor volunteered for “Warrior Weekend to Remember,” an event of activities and connection organized for Purple Heart recipients and Gold Star families that unfolded that year in Dayton, Ohio. The couple volunteered to transport participants to the various activities organized for participants, which included sky diving, night fishing, a minor league baseball game, concerts and similar.

One of the people they drove was Lars Williams who was from a local town, New Carlisle. Lars was a Gold Star family member who had lost his son, Staff Sergeant Wesley Williams, on December 10,2012 at age 25 while he served in Afghanistan. To honor his son, each day he ran from a flagpole at his son’s high school to a park dedicated to Greg Raynor, a fallen Sheriff’s Deputy.

Hollee explained that David was the son of Greg Raynor, who had been killed in the line of duty in 1978 at 32-years-old while responding to a domestic violence call. Deputy Sheriff Raynor had also served two tours in Vietnam with the Air Force, leaving behind two children: David and Stacie Raynor.

It seemed more than a coincidence that Lars had ended up in the car of Greg Raynor’s son, David Raynor, and his wife, Hollee. The idea for a run, and for a nonprofit that could fund projects, education, and assistive devices and therapy for first responders and service members was born that day.
